This product is in great condition. However, is no longer needed in owner's operations. According to the seller, it is noticeable in one of the photos that the drum is “caved-in”.  This is called a “paneled drum”.  Since the slurry was made in PEG-400, the abrasive is still wet with the PEG.  The PEG was removed by MEMC before shipment of the caked JIS abrasive.  But, there still remains some small amount of PEG in the abrasive. Over long time periods, the PEG will work its way into the drum wall and SLIGHTLY soften the plastic.  When this happens, that part of the drum tends to “cave–in”.  This “panel” effect happens only to a small fraction of the drums, but it does happen.  Please note, there is NO LOSS OF INTEGRITY TO THE DRUM, THE ABRASIVE, OR THE PEG.  This is a simple mechanical process that occurs in some plastic drums when any solvent is stored in the drum for a number of years.  The abrasive RETAINS FULL INTEGRITY with NO CONTAMINATION FROM THE DRUM.   The overwhelming preponderance of particles sizes for the entire inventory of approx.1900 drums is the 3 JIS sizes listed here.

For “mesh size”, see attached conversion table for mesh vs. micron size.   Notice that the values in (  ) do not exist in reality, but are merely estimations that are included for reference.   See the attached Mesh vs. Micron  Table attached above for reference.   Being sold "AS IS, WHERE IS". Item Description

This lot of Silicon Carbide Abrasive - JIS Grade is no longer needed for the company's own operation and is being sold as an asset liquidation for its owner.

    • Product: Silicon Carbide Abrasive (various grades)
    • Quantities: 300 MT approximately
    • Grade: JIS Grade (JIS-800, JIS-1200, and JIS-1500 - Green abrasive for trace metals). See attached TCLP Metals Analysis.
    • Specs (Particle Sizes):
      • Median particle size for JIS-800 is about 15 µm.
      • Median particle size for JIS-1500 is about 8-9 µm.
    • Manufacturer: MEMC USA
    • Packaging: packed in nearly 2000 Polypropylene drums and some steel drums.
      • 55-gallon P.P. drums (i.e.; more than 90% of the material)
      • 55-gallon steel drums (less than 10% of the material) = a total of about 1900 – 1950 drums
    • Description: Most or all are of very pure “JIS” grade, with a very small amount of Si contamination. The abrasive is a hard cake that contains about 10 % PG-400, but feels dry to the touch, and easily crumbles.
    • Applications: In metallurgical and other industries
    Size DesignationD-50 Median Particle Size (um) - Theory / 0% Kerf Solids*Mesh
    JIS - 800 13.0 - 16.0~(700-1000)
    JIS - 12008.7 - 9.7  è 10~(1250 – 1300)
    JIS - 15007.5 - 8.7~(1400 – 1700)

*D-50 size range is dependent on several factors including Laser analyzer used; sample preparation;  level of kerf solids in abrasive; etc.   Even “virgin” JIS particle size standards will vary in their “particle distribution curves (PDC) depending on the manufacturer and the variables listed here.   For abrasive PDC with increasing levels of kerf solids, the D – 50 value will trend lower than “Theory”.

Note:  The abrasive was used to cut semiconductor grade Si ingots into high purity semiconductor grade wafers used for manufacture of I.C.s  for all types of electronic equipment.  The purity of the Si ingots was the highest in the world, thereby complying with the extremely high quality and purity standards of the Semi Industry.    The slicing of a single ingot requires a reservoir of JIS – abrasive slurry at an approximate volume of about 20 – 25 gal of RTU ingot slicing slurry.   Each reservoir of slurry was used only for ONE ingot cut.   This is the reason the PDCs for the various samples submitted shows an unexpectedly low level of Si and SiC kerf in each PDC.
