| Quantity: | 1 Unit |
| Condition: | Per Seller: On May 1, 2010, the Engine suffered a major breakdown on Cylinder A9. The Engine shutdown after a loud explosion was heard. The Engine was running normal load capacity of 17.5 MW with no indication of an imminent breakdown. This is a 18 Cylinder Engine Block used for supplying electricity to the country of Panama. Although the initial damaged occurred on May 1, 2010, the unit was repaired back to it's pre-loss condition on August 23, 2010. Damage Per Report: The crankcase cover of Cylinder A9 was broken into 6 pieces and all were found lying at the A-Bank catwalk grating. Cylinder A9 service window was found lying on the floor next to DE03. There is a large hole of not less than 25 cm diameter at the camshaft box at A-Bank side. There is a crack on the engine block at the cylinder A9 bottom part of the window which extended up to the bed plate flange. July 2010 Lock-N-Stitch executed repairs on the Engine Clock Cam box, service door and Base Plate to remedy the damages as listed above. See below, scope of work completed: Cut out the damaged and broken edges around the blow-out into the Cam box to create perpendicular and straight edges. Cut the class 40 gray iron patch to fit into the prepared hole with a very close fit. Stitching of the patch into cam box using our Castmaster pins. The crack below the inspection door was stitched with Castmaster pins extending all the way through the cracked walls of the block. Installed L40 locks across the crack to add additional strength. The stitching is complete and the repairs are ground and machined flush to the surface making the stitching repair invisible. During August 2010 Lock-N-Stitch conducted damage repairs found on the A9 lower and upper bore and stud hole threads. See below, scope of work completed: Metal stitched two cracks and hand finished all surfaces to match the contours Manufactured 4 special Full-Torque thread repair inserts that match the original holes. Manufactured special hole boring tool to assure perfect alignment to the lower threaded hole. Tapped each hole using special FT18 Full-Torque taps. Installed 3 FT18 repair inserts Installed locking pins to prevent the inserts from ever backing out Upon repair of the unit several ultrasonic inspections were completed to confirm repairs were properly executed and the unit was properly functioning. There were three ultra sonic inspections conducted between October 2010 and February 2011. See below conclusion from the final report: The ultrasonic inspection made in the four (4) specific points, shows that the signal was uniform compared with the healthy metal. Magnaflux testing performed at specified points, there are no cracks. In conclusion, all the points measured (4) are showing that the cracks are not spreading. As of today, the Engine Block has not shown any further signs of issues and has been in normal operation since the repairs were conducted. The company determined a replacement unit would be the best for their needs and is currently changing out the unit. Please see photos for more details. |
